Federal Capital Territory, FCT’s Social Development Secretariat, SDS, has denied media reports that Patience Jonathan’s Youth Centre located at Nyanya in the FCT was abandoned to rot away.
The SDS stressed that the report is capable of misleading and misinforming members of the public, especially residents of the seat of power.
In a press statement made available to Nigerian Pilot yesterday in Abuja by the Head, Publication Relations Unit of the SDS, Mr. Abuo Francis Ojie, said that such publication is mischievous with intent to malign the SDS and the FCT administration, adding that the reporter should have met relevant officials of the FCTA so as to balance his story.
“The fact is that the Patience Jonathan Youth Centre was established and commissioned in the year 2013 with a dual purpose of providing vocational skills training as well as recreation for FCT youths.
“Furthermore, the centre was also established to generate revenue for the FCT through lease of its facilities to MDAs, youth friendly NGOs and the general public,” the statement read.
According to Ojie, in line with the centre’s objectives, the centre has hosted a number of skills acquisition training programmes since its inception, stressing that the latest programme at the centre was a one-month leadership training organised by the Peace Corps of Nigeria.
“The youth centre is not a home for youths rather a resource centre where youth can visit. Thus, anybody visiting the centre when a programme is not going on will mistake it as a dormant place.
“The centre is constantly under the watch, patrol and surveillance of men of the Nigeria Police, drawn from the Nyanya Division with additional manpower support from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSDC, also from Nyanya Division.”
It said that discussion with the relevant department in the SDS is already ongoing with relevant partners for possible installation of solar power as an alternative measure to electricity so as to lighten up the facility and its environs.
Ojie called on the MDAs, Youth friendly Non Governmental Organisations, and members of the public to avail themselves the use of the facilities of the centre for their events.
