PEOPLES Democratic Party, PDP, in Nasarawa State said its members would not take part in the re-run election for Nasarawa/Toto Federal Constituency where last Saturday’s bye-election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was declared inconclusive.
State Chairman of the party, Francis Orogu, who made the PDP’s position known while addressing journalists at the state headquarters in Lafia, yesterday, said the party had lost confidence in the electoral umpire.
Orogu, who described the bye-election conducted last Saturday by INEC as a show of shame, alleged that the commission conspired with agents of the state government to manipulate the exercise in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate.
“We are not going to dignify the so-called re-run election which we know as a matter of fact that the commission is carrying out an illegality just to justify its dirty deals. In the first place, ad-hoc staff that were used in that election are card-carrying members of the APC. As a matter of fact, INEC gave room for the ruling APC to recruit its sympathisers and Igbera boys being tribal men of the APC candidate in that election.
“We are not surprised as to the ill conduct of INEC in this exercise. These are some of the issues we raised during the stakeholders meeting with the commission prior to the election and those things have come to pass”.
Meanwhile, INEC debunked media reports that last Saturday’s bye-election in Nasarawa/Toto Federal Constituency was inconclusive.
Supervising Resident Electoral Commission, Habu Zarma, who debunked the claim, explained that the announcement of a winner for the election was only put unhold as a result of the cancellation of a substantial number of votes.
He said result of the election was cancelled as a result of over voting and other irregularities, hence the re-run in the affected polling units today.
He said the re-run election would take place in 51 polling units in the two local governments that made up the constituency with Nasarawa Local Government having 40 affected polling units.
