Barring any unforeseen situation, Senator Godwill Akpabio (PDP Akwa Ibom North West) may today emerge as the Senate Minority Leader, following his endorsement for the position by the caucuses of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP across the six geo- political zones in the Senate.
It was gathered that15 senators from the South East met at the official residence of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu yesterday evening and unanimously endorsed him.
Similarly, 15 out of the 17 PDP senators from the South- South, Akpabio’s geo- political zone, had also endorsed him as their candidate for Senate Minority Leadership position.
Reliable source also informed journalists yesterday that Akpabio is the candidate of the entire five PDP senators from the South West geo- political zone.
Apart from Akpabio, other minority principal officers of the senate set to emerge today as approved by the various PDP caucuses in the senate are, Emmanuel Bwacha (PDP Taraba South), Senate Deputy Minority Leader; Philip Aduda (PDP FCT), Senate Minority Whip; and Abiodun Olujimi (PDP Ekiti South) as Deputy Minority Whip.
There has been controversy over the indication of interest by Akpabio for the post of Senate Minority Leader being a first time senator, which is against the rule of the upper chamber of the National Assembly.
