A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. John Olawole Fasogbon has cautioned the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP against unwarranted attacks on President Muhammad Buhari’s alleged delay in cabinet composition.
The ex-lawmaker asked the opposition party to allow the sense of national patriotism come into play and manifest while launching criticisms at the governing party.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, Fasogbon who is from Ife Federal Constituency of Osun State, pleaded with PDP to allow a new foundation that will give a rebirth to the country to be properly laid by the President in the best interest of the nation.
Fasogbon, who is a chieftain of PDP and former governorship aspirant, warned that undue criticism of the new government and unwarranted attacks against the President will not fetch anybody or group any goodwill, but will rather distract government from forging ahead in the way Nigerians wanted.
“As a foundation member of PDP and ardent lover and promoter of good governance in this country, I am duty bound to plead with the leadership of my party (PDP) to take it easy with President Muhammad Buhari.
“We should all allow him time to plan and lay the new government on a solid foundation. Governance is a serious business and we should not turn it to a child’s play”, he said.
Fasogbon, who is the Chairman of the Governing Council of Alvan Ikoku College of Education now Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri, Imo State, said that unwarranted and baseless attacks and undue criticism of the new government in power should not be welcomed by well-meaning Nigerians for now.
He recalled the advent of democracy in 1999 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo of PDP, adding that it took more than six months before the then government machinery could be put in place by the President.
Specifically, he said that as part of efforts then to clean the augean’s table, Chief Obasanjo as the new President travelled round the world to canvass for support of the advanced nations for Nigeria.
He explained that Nigeria benefitted immensely from the efforts because the Paris club among others, granted the forgiveness of the large chunks of the country’s debt.
“We are all living witnesses, Chief Obasanjo flew round the world, persuading world leaders to help Nigeria. The end result was a good governance and forgiveness of parts of our huge debt by the Paris Club and other creditors.
“So we should allow President Buhari too to take time to plan his government on a solid rock that will yield dividends of democracy for the citizenry and to find a permanent solution to the political and economic crises ravaging the country”, he said.
Fasogbon congratulated Buhari on his successful historic inauguration as the first President to emerge from the opposition party, and pleaded with him to ensure that Nigerians are not let down in his bid to make a better change for the nation.
He also called on the President to ensure adequate funding of two federal colleges of education elevated to full-fledged universities to enable them cope effectively with their new status.
