Elders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, un Akwa Ibom have called on President Muhamadu Buhari to caution members of his All Progressives
Congress, APC, in the area against utterances, which could lead to the breakdown of peace in the state.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its meeting in Uyo yesterday and read by a former military governor of the state, Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga, the elders noted with dismay recent inciting statements by some members of the party that the APC would take over Akwa Ibom state by all means.
The communiqué read in part, “that the Elders of our party calls on President Buhari to caution members of his party against reckless utterances and undemocratic tendencies that may not augur well for the growth and sustenance of peace and unity of our country.
“That we condemn in strong terms the inciting statements by some elements that they will take Akwa Ibom state by all means-hook or crook. We however wish to remind them that Akwa Ibom state is not for
sale, lease or hire purchase; they are advised to focus on elections and producing leaders in their respective states,” Nkanga said.
The 11 paragraph communiqué, which was adopted through a motion
moved by a former speaker of the State Assembly, Mr. Samuel Ikon and seconded by the deputy speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mrs Felicia Bassey, further noted that, the PDP was aware of plans by the APC to arrest, intimidate, hound and detain some of its members should there be a re-run election in the state.
The elders, however expressed confidence that, despite the Appeal Court ruling cancelling the governorship election in the state, the Supreme Court would still offer the party the opportunity for justice to be served to the people of Akwa Ibom state.
The party hierarchy in the state passed a vote of confidence on governor Udom Emmanuel, saying that, the mandate given to him on April 11, 2015 remained sacrosanct.
“We wish to restate our commitment to the success of the Divine Mandate and assure Akwa Ibom people and all Nigerians, that the PDP remains a religion and a tradition in the state,” the elders said.
It may be recalled that since the Appeal Court judgment calling for the cancellation of the April 11th, 2015 governorship election in Akwa Ibom state, it has met with strong condemnation by the PDP who is accusing the APC of plans to take over the state by all means.
The three senatorial districts and 10 federal constituencies have held meetings condemning the court ruling and drumming support for the incumbent governor of the PDP, Mr Udom Emmanuel and at the same time, reminding the people of the state that, the PDP has zoned the governorship position to Eket senatorial district where the governor comes from.
They have also maintained that it was an injustice for the APC governorship candidate, Mr. Umana Okon Umana who is from Uyo senatorial district, which produced Obong Victor Attah as governor on the platform of the PDP in 1999 aspire to the position after Godswill Akpabio from Ikot Ekpene senatorial district had served his two tenures between 2007and 2015 with Eket senatorial district yet to produce a governor since the creation of the state, 28 years ago.
