two factions of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday held parallel state congresses in Owerri, the Imo State capital with Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie emerging chairman of the Sen. Modu Sheriff faction and Chief Ezekwem emerged for the Ahmed Makarfi group.
With the development, indications are rife that the leadership crisis rocking the PDP, particularly in Imo State, is far from being over soonest.
While the senator for Imo West (Orlu Zone) Chief Hope Uzodimma and a former governor of the State –Chief Ikedi Ohakim held their Congress at the state PDP Secretariat along Okigwe Road, the Hon. Emeka Ihedioha group conducted theirs at the Kanu Nwankwo Football Academy behind IMSU, premises.
Nigerian Pilot reliably gathered that Sen. Uzodimma and Ohakim allegedly spearheaded the congress at the party secretariat, Okigwe road, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and 2015 governorship candidate, Chief Emeka Ihedioha led that which took place at the Papilo Academy.
In the tensed situation, heavily armed mobile policemen, plain cloth security operatives as well as hefty thugs stood on guard at each of the venues apparently to forestall possible disruption of each exercise by hoodlums loyal to the rivals.
The separate congresses despite the size of turnout resulted in terrific gridlock within the capital city.
Other dignitaries behind the Sen. Uzodimma factional congress which however recorded low turnout included: Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, ex-governor Achike Udewa etc.
As at press time, the Uzodimma faction had elected Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie as new state chairman while result of the Ihedioha group was being awarded.
