• Camp holds Party hostage
  • National Convention preparations in jeopardy

Ahead of the Congresses and National Convention of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, there are indications that the increasing cold war among members of the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, may affect the conduct of the exercise.
Discreet investigations by Nigerian Pilot revealed that there are at least two different camps within the PDP NWC. While the former acting National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus and the National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh are allegedly leading a camp, the party’s National Secretary, Prof Wale Oladipo is said to be leading the other.
According to our findings, before the emergence of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the national chairman, the Secondus/Metuh group has been holding the NWC to ransom such that nothing meaningful happened unless it has the nod of this group. We learnt that some NWC members had to lobby the group “for them to get anything.”
Our source declared that “PDP has almost been turned into the private estate of this group as they ran the party as sole administrators.”
They mentioned some caretaker committee members in Imo State who were said to have been personally handpicked by the Secondus/Metuh group.
Our source declared that the emergence of Modu Sheriff is a blessing to the party, as he has weakened the influence of this group on the party.
He declared that prior to the emergence of Sheriff, the Secondus/Metuh group had almost completed a plot to hijack the conduct of the primaries and convention, including the foisting of unpopular candidates at the state levels.
However, our source further disclosed that since Sheriff assumed office this group had been employing different strategies to penetrate and win his heart and eventually, start dictating what direction the new chairman should go.
“We are elated that Modu Sheriff is an experienced politician who understands the game and you can be sure that they cannot outsmart him.”
He, however, warned the chairman to dine with these NWC members “with very long spoon so that he is not caught napping whenever they strike.
“You remember how they connived and stabbed former chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, at the back. They all pretended to love Tukur but look at how they betrayed him. They are largely responsible for the ouster of Bamanga Tukur,” the source added.
He also disclosed that some of the NWC members who openly superintended over the misfortune of the party during the last general elections are plotting to contest during the forthcoming national convention.
“Our members are not happy with them and they will surely throw them out of the NWC if they dare contest for any position during the national convention,” he said.
However, the PDP chairman is said to have continued to call for calm and unity among members if the party must be reckoned with again in the country ahead the 2019 polls.
