oshiomole1Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Edo State, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to beam its searchlight on the administration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole.
The party said it has enough evidence on the corrupt practices of elected and appointed leaders of the state starting with the governor.
At a press conference at the weekend in Benin City, the state capital, the PDP Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, attributed the financial crisis rocking the local governments in the state to Governor Oshiomhole, pointing out that while the governor plunged the councils into the quagmire, he was bereft of ideas on how to bring them out of the woods.
Fifteen of the 18 councils in the state owe workers’ salaries ranging from three to ten months, which has forced the employees to resort to prayers including vigils for an end to the situation.
Orbih said the suggestion by Governor Oshiomhole to stop the security votes of the council chairmen if the salaries were not paid was laughable and immoral.
He stated that the problem was not because the councils were not getting money but because the state government seizes the money meant for the councils monthly, adding that the sum of N212.278 billion had been released to the 18 councils in the state between November 2008 and April 2015 when Governor Oshiomhole had been in office.
Orbih, who said the council chairmen earned between N1.7million and N1.2million each monthly as security votes, while councillors earn about N1million each as security votes, noted that the combined sum of N42million was nowhere close to the over N500million Governor Oshiomhole collects monthly as security votes.
He posited that the governor has no moral right to talk about accountability and transparency in Abuja while fleecing Edo of her resources and challenged him to return the money he had collected as security votes because Edo had never experienced security challenges under his watch.
Orbih, who also spoke on the flood and erosion problems confronting Benin City, said there was nothing on ground to justify the N30billion facility obtained from the capital market and the N5billion received from the World Bank to curtail the twin menace as many houses and property were lost to downpour last week in the state capital.
He said: “Here is a governor asking council chairmen to forfeit N1.2million per month but who cannot forfeit N500million. The total security vote of the councils in a year is about what Oshiomhole collects every month.
“He brought this hardship upon the people and he is now trying to absolve himself. He impressed upon the council chairmen not to cry out but one good thing is that the Edo people already know the truth. Edo people must sit up and reflect on the deception of Oshiomhole and his party and make the right choice next year,” Orbih said.
