National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the weekend, took Senator Ali Modu Sheriff to the cleaners over the purported suspension of the Edo State Executive Committee of the party.
A statement issued by its spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said the latest move by Sheriff “is clearly part of his desperation and that of his paymasters to orchestrate confusion that would lead to the failure of the party in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State; an election that the party is otherwise well placed to win.
“The caretaker committee recognises and would continue to relate with the leadership of the party in Edo State that was validly elected at the recent congresses, even as it called on members and supporters of the party in the state to remain steadfast and vigilant in the face of the mischief being perpetrated by Sheriff in order to destroy the party.
“The general public, leadership and members of the PDP in Edo State are advised to ignore the statement as it is completely with neither basis nor authority. Procedures for taking such far reaching decisions are prescribed in the constitution of the party.
“It is no longer news that the Sheriff-led National Working Committee and indeed all national officers were removed by the party’s convention, which is the highest decision making organ of the PDP. Senator Sheriff and his cohorts therefore lack the locus to take any decision on behalf of the party.”
The caretaker committee also appealed to the police, Department of State Services and indeed all security agencies “to call Sheriff to order, as well as keep more than an eye on him, so that he doesn’t precipitate crisis in any part of the country, for which he is well known, since we, as Nigerians, already have enough on our hands to contend with.”
Also reacting to the suspension, Chairman of Edo State chapter of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, dismissed Sheriff and advised him to return to Borno to face his political integration.
“Let me advise the former acting national chairman to get a Christian who is close to him to tell him the story of King Solomon and the two women who were laying claim to a child. In that piece, he will discover that the true owner of the child pleaded with the king not to divide the child whereas the pretender accepted that the child should be divided and half given to her and the other half to the real mother.
“Sheriff’s action has shown that he is not a true member of the PDP. By his pronouncements and actions, he has shown the whole world that he is not a true member of the party. He is on a mission designed by the party in government that is being executed by him.
“For us in Edo State PDP, we will ignore the rantings of Sheriff and face the business of defeating Adams Oshiomhole and his surrogate, that is, their APC candidate. Let me quickly remind Sheriff that we, members of the national executive, were the ones that appointed him as acting chairman.
“He was never elected as chairman of the party and he should atop arrogating powers that he doesn’t possess to himself. Hundred Sheriffs cannot dissolve Edo exco as he is no longer the acting chairman of the party. The only body that is constitutionally empowered by the party to carry out the functions of the national executive today is the Makarfi-led national executive which by law is the national executive that is in place.
“The convention remains the highest decision making organ of our party, the PDP. Arising from the decision of the national convention that was held in Port Harcourt, Sheriff stopped being the acting national chairman. Let me emphasize the word ‘acting’ because he was never an elected national chairman.
“At the time we appointed Sheriff to act as the national chairman, we gave him a mandate that should last for three months and at the end of it, we never renewed his mandate. So, the convention with its overwhelming power, dissolved the executive national organ of the party and appointed a caretaker committee that will oversee the affairs of the party pending when we hold the next national convention to elect officials.
“So, Sheriff is merely exercising his foul mouth to make illegal pronouncements that can never be obeyed by any person in our party. I advise him to steer clear of Edo PDP and face his political integration in Borno where since he left office as governor has been a hotbed of political crisis.
On nomination forms collected by aspirants from Sheriff, Chief Orbih described the development as laughable.
“I want to say very clearly that if Sheriff decides to print forms in his private residence in Maitama and people decide to go there to pick forms, they are not picking PDP nomination forms, but they are only engaging themselves in an exercise of Sheriff’s make believe political-relevance game. He is just playing a game. Sheriff as far as the national chairmanship of the PDP is concerned is now history.”
