The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday said it will zone its 2019 presidential ticket to the North, “to assuage any ill feelings in the North over any perceived breach of the party’s zoning principle.”
This was one of the key recommendations of the PDP post-election review committee headed by the Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu.
The recommendation was endorsed by the Acting National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, after receiving the report of the post-election committee at the party’s national secretariat, Abuja.
Senator Ekweremadu said the committee also recommended that the party adopt direct primaries as the sole means of electing PDP candidates for any election at all levels.
“The use of delegates has been grossly compromised and abused, and therefore discontinued forthwith to return true ownership of the party to the people.”
He said that the committee also recommended that the role of ‘Party Leader’, which has no basis in the constitution of the PDP, should henceforth be discontinued at all levels to strengthen the structure of the party at all levels.
On the issue of funding which hitherto allowed moneybags to hijack the party, the Ekweremadu committee recommended that the party should henceforth be self-funding, relying on membership registrations and enforcement of dues and levies as its primary source of income at all levels in line with party’s constitution.
Ekweremadu said the committee which was inaugurated on May 5 with a nine-point terms of reference also endorsed biometric membership registration to align the party’s records with modern technology.
He further added that in the course of their interaction with Nigerians across the nation, the people are already getting fed up with the APC administration because alienation of segments of the country by the APC administration.
“The nation now better acknowledges the fact that only the PDP can provide sense of belonging to every part of Nigeria irrespective of their political choices.”
In his response, Prince Uche Secondus said the National Working Committee, NWC, will ensure that the recommendations are transmitted to all the relevant organs of the party for their inputs and approval.
He said PDP made several mistakes in the past and promised that the party will not repeat same mistakes in future.
