A 25-year-old unemployed, Ayobami Micheal, is to spend the next one month in Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos,
for stealing phone worth N60,000, an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court ruled on Monday.
The court slammed the sentence on the phone thief without an option of fine after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Micheal had pleaded for leniency before he was sentenced.
Magistrate O.A. Layinka, who handed down the verdict, said:“Based on the facts of this case confirmed in the report and the
plea of leniency, I hereby sentence you to one month in prison without an option of fine.’’
Earlier, Police Prosecutor Donjor Perezi told court that Michael, whose address is unknown, was arraigned on charge of stealing.
Perezi said the accused stole a mobile phone valued at N60,000 on May 6 at 2.00 p.m. at No. 22, Awolowo way, Ikeja, Lagos.
The accused, who entered the shop of the complainant, Obiora Chinyeaka, on the pretext of buying a mobile phone, stole the phone and ran away, he said.
“The accused had told the seller that he wanted to buy a Huawei P8 mobile phone and asked the complainant to bring out the phone to have a look before making payment.
“Within split seconds, Micheal absconded with the phone and was nowhere to be found until he was recently apprehended on May 22.”
The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
