Plateau state House of Assembly has urged the Federal Government to include the state in the rehabilitation of the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, in the country.‬
‪The House gave the advice under matter of urgent public importance presented by member representing Barkin Ladi Constituency in the state, Peter Ibrahim.‬
‪Ibrahim noted that a lot of the displaced persons in the state are going through serious hardships, and that they need much of government support, stressing that though the state was enjoying the relative peace due to government efforts, the soaring condition of most of the displaced persons remained worrisome.‬
‪He said, ‘’Last year by this time, I presented a motion in this chamber where I spoke passionately about the incessant killings in my constituency and other local governments of this state.‬ Today, we can all be happy to say that through the conscious effort of this House and the Executive, we are enjoying relative peace on the Plateau “.‬
‪’’However, a lot of the victims of those conflicts are displaced and right now, their condition is very pathetic.‬ As a representative, these people usually troop in their numbers to my house on daily basis just to get food to eat.‬ As a government, we can only succeed when we are able to meet the welfare and needs of the people; hence all effort will be fruitless.‬ So, I call on this honourable House to ensure that government at various levels device proper channels to rehabilitate these displaced persons,’’ he said.‬
‪Also contributing, member representing Mikkang Constituency, Na’anlong Daniel, said that the safety and concern of the citizens should be, first, priority of every responsible government.‬
‪He advised that government evolve better strategy to ameliorate the sufferings of the displaced persons.
They are also Nigerian citizens, so they have equal rights.’’‬
‪The member representing Pengana Constituency, Ezekiel Afon, also called on the federal government to support the IDPs.‬
‪’’Since the inception of ethno-religious crisis on the Plateau, we never enjoyed any palliative from the Federal Government; we have been doing things by ourselves.‬ The crisis in the North-East came much more later when we have been passing through serious hardships, but nothing has been done to support our people.‬ So, I call on the Federal Government to include Plateau in the rehabilitation measures taken for the North-East, since most of the IDPs here are from the that region,’’ he said.‬
