Ondo state Police Command has arrested a middle-aged man in Ondo town, who has been allegedly parading himself as an officer attached to Motor Traffic Section of the Yaba Police Division in the town.
The suspect whose identity has not been disclosed by the police as at press time, was allegedly fond of extorting money from motorists and commercial motorcyclists in the community.
According to a source in the Police Division, the suspect who dressed in complete police uniform was arrested last Tuesday at about 7pm as he was trying to carry out his usual ‘business’ on an ‘Okada’ rider
around Iyalaje area of the ancient town.
The source narrated that, on the fateful day, he (the suspect) stopped the commercial motorcyclist on the ground that he was riding unregistered motorcycle , collected his key and requested for the particulars of the motorbike but the okada rider was said to have refused to hand over the particulars to him.
He (the okada man) the source said, demanded for the identity card of the suspect before he could give him his particulars but the failure of the alleged fake cop to produce his identity card raised suspicion of
the okada rider and his other colleges around the area.
The matter degenerated to a hot argument, members of the Ondo town branch of the Ondo State Bike Owners and Riders Association (OSBORA) then invited the police from Yaba who later arrested the
suspect and detained him at the police station.
At the station, during the interrogation of the suspect, he was reported to have made some confessional statements that he was a security man in one of the Higher Institutions of learning in the town, saying he was into the illegal business in other to make ends meet.
A police source who also confirmed the incident, stated that the matter would soon be transferred to Criminal Investigation Department, CID, of the state police command headquarters in Akure, the State capital for further action.
However, the State police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Wole Ogodo, when contacted on telephone on the matter, as at the press time, said he had not been briefed from the Yaba Divisional Police Station.
He said “I will call the DPO to confirm the story and I will let you know.”
