Rivers State Police Command says it has arrested one of its Police Corporal, Edonwa Timi and 17 others for various crimes including, car snatching, kidnapping, armed robbery and cultism in the State.
Corporal Timi, who was attached to the C4i Unit of the command, is said to have been involved in car snatching, with three of his other gang members, Tonye David West, Michael Odih, and Kelly Oba, who are also currently under Police custody.
Briefing newsmen before parading the suspect in Port Harcourt, yesterday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Nnamdi Omoni, stated that the arrests were made between January and March, 2017.
He said during the period under review, eight suspected kidnappers, six armed robbers and four cultists were arrested, while two kidnap victims were rescued unhurt.
The PPRO further stated that, also arrested is an Inspector of the Nigerian Prisons, Eket, Akwa Ibom State, Inspector George Ina, alongside Jonathan Okon, by the Rapid Response Team, RRT29 after which some item were recovered from them.
Similarly, the PPRO stated that a fake soldier identified as Azubuike Ihejirika from Isiala Ngwa, Abia State, was arrested by SARS recently, in Military camouflage in Port Harcourt.
According to the PPRO, the Command has prosecuted 30 suspected armed robbers, 25 cultists and 19 kidnappers within the period under review.
Items recovered from the suspects, according to Nnamdi, included 18 arms, 200 rounds of ammunition, six vehicles, large quantities of weeds and charms.
The Command’s spokesman, while assuring Rivers people of the Command’s resolve to rid the state of criminals, said that the Acting Commissioner of Police, DCP Ahmed Magaji, has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, DPOs, and Heads of Tactical Units to redouble their efforts and embark on “massive raid of suspected criminal hideouts and black spots” in the State.
