Edo State Police Command has detained ‎a corporal guarding a traditional ruler (names withheld) for allegedly shooting to death two women, among them, a pregnant woman at Fugar, headquarters of Etsako Central local government area of the state.
The incident occurred when the corporal guarding the traditional ruler in a bid to fire warning shots into the air as he was leaving the venue of the burial ceremony, accidentally shot into the crowd killing the pregnant woman and another.
The incident during the burial of the late Chief Etu, a retired village headmaster, caused pandemonium, as angry youths attempted to lynch the officers but for the intervention of the chairman of the council, Mr. Emmanuel Momoh who calmed them down.
State Police Commissioner, CP Samuel Adegbuyi who described the incident as shocking and attributed it to accidental discharge, disclosed that the officer, Chris Aliu has been arrested while investigation was ongoing.
The pensive CP, who hinted that he had earlier warned police officers in the state against unprofessional attitudes, assured that the matter would be dealt with accordingly.
Nigerian Pilot sources said that the officer’s shots, besides killing the pregnant woman, identified as Mrs. Sandra Imakhu, also killed another woman, Aishietu Aliyu, who was standing nearby.
Sandra, who was said to be carrying a two month old baby on her back, came to the party along with Aishitu Aliyu, who came
from a neighbouring village to assist a friend to bury the late father, before their sudden death.
