Bayelsa State Police command yesterday debunked the unfounded rumours making the rounds that policemen have been directed and are arresting people selling and drinking the illicit drink popularly known as “ogogoro”.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Asinim Butswat to newsmen in Yenagoa, said that, “the command wishes to state categorically that no order nor instructions has been given to policemen to arrest anyone selling or drinking ogogoro.
“Members of the public are advised to go about their lawful and legitimate businesses, they should report to the appropriate authorities, the conduct of any policeman who arrest, extorts, intimidate people in this regard, please.”
In a related development, the command said the anti-kidnapping/ anti-vice unit of the police responded to a distress call, that some unknown gunmen had invaded the compound of one Allison Amachree Rollins, at Elebele Community in Ogbia Local Government Area.
According to the statement, at about 3:30pm, two of the suspects, one Nelson Isaac 23 years of Bomadi Ekpetiama, in Yenagoa LGA and Tony Alaboh 24 years of Agberi Community in Sagbama LGA, were arrested at Choba, Rivers State in possession of a locally made pistol loaded with one live cartridge.
