Police in Imo State at the weekend exhumed the decomposing remains of a 63-year-old woman, Madam Ogo Omereji who was reportedly kidnapped, murdered and buried in a shallow grave in Ohaji/Egbema area of the state.
The abductors, who were nephews of the victim, had in September kidnapped the hapless woman and demand ransom from the family.
Nigerian Pilot gathered that the family of the victim allegedly paid the sum of N500,000 to the suspected kidnappers but they eventually killed the her.
There are indications that the three-man gang may have resorted to taking the life of the woman probably because she identified them.
Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Andrew Enwerem who addressed newsmen before the corpse of slain Mrs Omereji was exhumed, disclosed that following the report of the kidnap, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the State Police Command arrested the three suspects who confessed to have kidnapped the woman, murdered and buried her in a shallow grave in a thick forest in Awara, Ohaji/Egbema LGA.
Enwerem gave names of the suspects while they were being paraded as Gift Emeka, Sunday Uchenna and Emma Chinedu, all relatives of the murdered victim.
The police team led by the Commissioner of Police himself, CP Taiwo Lakanu, took the suspects to the site where they dug a shallow grave and buried their victim.
Enwerem stated that the Imo Police Command recently launched ‘Operation Nkpochapu,’ meaning Operation Wipe Out in the state, stressing that the initiative was already yielding positive results.
He added: “Again in our resolve to get close to the public, the command initiated a telephone directory which has been distributed to the members of the public through their traditional rulers.”
Speaking, one of the suspects (Chinedu) said he was lured into the heinous crime by greed for money and that he deeply regretted the act.
When the body of the woman was exhumed, the entire community was thrown into turmoil and sympathisers who thronged the forest to witness the exercise demanded to take over the suspects and give them summary sentence.
It took the gallant resistance of the heavily armed cops to save the culprits from jungle justice, as they were taken into custody by the police.
