THERE was pandemonium at the UTC Junction area of the old Port Harcourt township in Rivers State yesterday when operatives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Intelligence Team engaged a fourman gang of robbers on the way to attack Arik Airplane, killing three and leaving one fatally injured. Nigerian Pilot gathered that the gang members stopped by the electronic traffic light at the junction as there were other vehicles before them when one of the suspects came out of the vehicle they were driving in and opened fire on the police officers who over powered. Confirming the incident which occurred around 10am, the State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, said the IGP Intelligence Team intercepted the gang while on action and added that three of the suspects were killed during the gun battle, while one was arrested alive and that on interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed that they were on a mission to attack Arik Airline. The PPRO, the suspect, who gave his name as Peter James, confessed to have killed a police corporal last year during the All Progressives Congress, APC rally in Okirika. “Today, November 28, 2016, the IGP Intelligence Response Team, working on credible intelligence intercepted the gang of armed robbers who heading to Arik Airline. The robbers planned to attack the passengers and anybody who will repel them. “The IGP team intercepted them but and on sighting the police, the suspects opened fire on them and then there was serious exchange of fire at the end of which three of them were killed and one was arrested. “The arrested suspect who gave his name as Peter James, 30 years old and a native of Bayelsa State has confessed to have killed a police officer, one Corporal Ifeanyi at an APC rally in Okirika sometime last year. He is helping us now with our investigation.” The PPRO called on Rivers people to have confidence in the Police, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Francis Mobolaji Odesanya has prepared to fight criminals in the state. He, however, disclosed that some police officers who sustained injuries were responding to treatment. Items recovered from the suspects, according to Omoni, included one GPMG rifle with 1,000 rounds of ammunition, one AK47 rifle and two fully loaded magazines.
