More trouble for NURTW, RTEAN, others

Following the order of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, that all illegal roadblocks mounted by revenue collectors and transport unions should be dismantled immediately across the country, trouble now looms for such toll collectors as police have already constituted what the IGP described as “X-Squad.” Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Enugu State Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu informed Nigerian Pilot that the command had complied with the IGP’s directive and had swung into action. “Sure, we have constituted the X-Squad and we are complying with the IGP’s directive,” Amaraizu said Recall that IGP Idris yesterday gave a directive that such illegal roadblocks should be dismantled immediately to make it easier for wayfaring on the highways and other roads in Nigeria. Subsequently, different commands will heed the directive and rid Nigerian roads of such unnecessary obstructions. Before now, some groups have themselves into bugaboos on the roads in the name of collecting one revenue or the other. Motorists that spoke on the new development said that it was a welcome one because such revenue collectors did not only extort them but cause road obstruction. “I like what the IGP has done. It is a good one if the directive will be carried out as directed,” a bus driver said, pointing out that “those people are touts and should not be on our roads. At times they cause accidents by chasing motorists.”
