A glance at the Premier League fixture list for this weekend reveals an unusual quirk – Aston Villa’s match with Manchester United will be played on Friday night.
The clash at Villa Park was originally scheduled to be Sky’s Saturday Night Football fixture with the regular 5.30pm kick-off.
But West Midlands Police were concerned their resources may be stretched because of a planned English Defence League (EDL) march being held eight miles away in Walsall on Saturday afternoon.
They asked the Premier League if the match at Villa Park could be moved forward 24 hours.
The police also asked if the Sky Bet Championship matches between Wolves and Hull City could be rescheduled to Sunday and this now has a midday kick-off.
Sunday was not an option for United due to the possibility of a Champions League play-off and they now play Club Brugge next Tuesday night.
The Villa-United match will still be screened live on Sky Sports 1, who are starting their coverage at 6pm.
