Imo State Police Command yesterday paraded 35 persons suspected to be cultists and armed robbers who were arrested between June 12 and 14, 2015 by men and officers of the command.
The suspected cultists numbering 25 and 10 armed robbers, were arrested in Owerri and Orlu areas of the state following the command’s renewed efforts to rid the state of all criminal activities.
Parading the suspects before newsmen yesterday at the command headquarters, Owerri, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem, disclosed that the command, through a tipoff, arrested 25 Black Axe cultists who had converged on the state from parts of the country to hold their national conference/ initiation of new members in a bush around the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO, area.
Enwerem, who stood in for the Commissioner of Police in-charge of Imo State, CP Austin Evbakhavbokun, further disclosed that exhibits recovered from the suspects included one locally made cut-to-size gun, one live cartridge, expended cartridges and items suspected to be charms used by the group for initiation.
Also, the PPRO stated that operatives of the command on June 12 and 13 respectively nabbed a group of persons believed to be armed robbers in Orlu area and its environs of Imo State while acting on a tip-off.
According to him, the syndicate had on April 24, robbed one Igbozulike Investment of No. 125/126 International Market, Orlu of the sum of N841,000.
He stated that the gang also struck at No. 26 Old Owerri Road, Orlu, where they robbed the victim of phones and the sum of N80,000 and other valuables while also breaking into another phone shop where they made away with 50 exotic phones valued at over N3,000,000.
Enwerem hinted that the robbers after their chain of operations sold the phones at give-away prices to one Amaechi Okonkwo, a phone dealer at the International Market, Orlu.
The syndicate, the command’s spokesman added, also robbed a recharge card dealer and tiles dealer both of Umuna Otlu and dispossessed them of the sum of N900,000 and recharge cards worth over N300,000.
He listed the items recovered from the suspects to include: one locally-made short gun, expended cartridges, two single barrel guns and three motorcycles.
Among the suspected cultists are Emeka Chukwu 29, Alias Henry 22, Kingsley Chijioke 25, Chidera Isdore 25 and Ikechukwu Innocent.
