As president Muhammadu Buhari is set to recruit 100,000 police officers across the country, a group known as Association of Edo Professionals have canvassed for National Diploma certificate, ND or National Certificate of Education, NCE, as a minimum qualification for entry into the Police force.
The group also said the intending recruits must have basic knowledge of computer and there should be a continuous training for all rank and file in the service.
Edo professionals, through two of their trustees, Victor Osarenren and Dr. Momodu Kassim-Momodu, stated their position in Abuja during the 2015 national security summit held last Monday.
President Muhammadu Buhari, during his address at the event, revealed plans by the federal government to employ at least 100,000 police officers and establish a properly trained and equipped federal anti-terrorism multi-agency task force that will effectively address the challenge of Boko Haram and any form of insurgency in a sustainable manner.
Buhari said efforts were being made to enhance the operational capacity of officers of the Nigeria Police through a tailor-made training programme that will give them the right civil orientation in their roles as guardians of the constitution. In order to further strengthen the security of the public space, consideration is being given to the expansion of the CCTV monitoring system across major cities and towns in the country, while the police accountability mechanism will be strengthened.
The group said each police division should be encouraged to have a police community relations committee, and that caution should be exercised in order to avoid infiltration by persons or groups whose intentions or activities could be inimical to security and public interest.
