The police in Nasarawa State have rescued former acting Vice Chancellor of University of Agriculture Makurdi, Benue State, Prof. Emmanuel Ogunwolu, who was abducted in Makurdi last Thursday night.
Ogunwolu, a professor of entomology was kidnapped at about 10:47 p.m. at the varsity staff quarters and was rescued at a village in Obi Local Government area of Nasarawa State Friday evening.
According to the acting Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, UAM chapter, Dr. Bemgbah Anjembe, the abductors had on that fateful night scaled through the fence of Prof Ogunwolu’s residence after which they got hold of his houseboy and tied his hands and mouth.
“The kidnappers got to his house, climbed over the fence and pointed a gun at his housekeeper who heard the noise and came out. They took the housekeeper in, tied his hands at the back and garbed his mouth.
At that point, the professor was not in the house.
“He came home about two hours later and from the information we had, it was the kidnappers that even opened the gate for him and hid behind the gate so that he did not know who opened the gate which was very unusual in his house,” Anjembe said.
The ASUU chair further said he had to quickly get across to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Emmanuel Kutcha on hearing the sad news, stressing that Ogunmole on noticing something unusual hesitated and did not drive in immediately.
According to him, “After sometime, he came down from his vehicle to find out who was opening the gate. It was at this point that they seized him and started beating him after which they forced him into his 406 Saloon car and drove away.”
The ASUU chairman also said he was informed Friday morning that the Ogunwole who was shot on his leg was abandoned with his car around Kiana, Nasarawa State an information he said was also confirmed by the VC.
However, eyewitnesses said the police rescued the professor after some villagers in Keana Local Government Area, who were woken up by his cry for help, when his abductors were torturing him, alerted the police.
“We saw a moving vehicle in which a man was seriously crying for help around midnight and we quickly mobilised ourselves and also alerted the police to pursue the vehicles, said one of the eye witnesses.
The police in Keana were said to have also alerted their colleagues in Obi who quickly mounted a roadblock and in the process to stop the vehicle, the kidnappers were said to have engaged the police in a gun duel resulting in the death of one of the abductors while the police arrested two others.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP Ismaila Numan said the Professor was rescued by the police attached to Obi Division at about 6:00 a.m. on Friday.
He said on siting the police, the suspected kidnappers shot their victim on his leg and fled into the bush while the driver who drove the car, one Tersoo Terse, 29 years old was apprehend at the spot while other members of the syndicate were still at large at the time of filing this report.
