Female staff of the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, AIFCE, staff college Owerri has been rescued by policemen from committing suicide.
The woman after she climbed a water tank stanchion of the height of a three- storey building had threatened to jump down from there because she was frustrated and despaired with life.
Speaking to newsmen yesterday, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Andrew Enwerem, confirmed the incident, but declined to disclose the name of the woman for obvious security reasons.
He stated that the woman attempted to take her life, but was rescued unhurt as a result of the early intervention by policemen who were invited by her neighbours who heard her shouting from the heights.
According to him, the woman climbed the high stanchion as early as 5 am and was shouting on top of her voice that she was frustrated and tired of life.
“A woman was rescued from committing suicide early hours of this morning (yesterday) by the Police. We got a distress call in the early hours of the morning that a woman was going to commit suicide along MCC road in Owerri and a team of Policemen was dispatched to the scene and the woman was brought down from the height.
“As I speak with you, she has been identified as a Staff of the College and she is still in Police custody and will be released to the family after preliminary investigations”.
Nigerian Pilot however gleaned that her action was not unconnected with the fact that the lady has been at loggerhead with the management of the college over the continued delay of her promotion and the nonpayment of her allowances.
On a further check, another management staff of the institution who preferred anonymity, said, “how does it concern the College if somebody decides to kill herself in her home. It is entirely the person’s decision and the College should be left out of it.”
