Police in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, have smashed a notorious armed robbery syndicate that has been terrorising some parts of the city and inflicting havoc on innocent residents.
The 12-man gang is led by a 24-year-old Avaungwa Dennis, whose gang members rob and kill at any incident.
Parading the suspects before newsmen at the FCT Police Command headquarters, Garki, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Wilson Inalegwu said the syndicate specialised in invading estates and robbing residents of their valuables, including cars and cash.
CP Inalegwu revealed further that the gang was responsible for the recent robbery operations that resulted to the killing of some Fulani herdsmen at Pyakassa in Lugbe axis.
“The gang is also responsible for the recent robbery at super cell estate, Apo where 6 houses were raided, 2 women killed and 2 persons were badly injured. Some of the areas the gang has carried out its robbery operations in Lugbe include gold city estate, Goshen estate, rainbow estate, urban mass, trade more estate. Super cell estate Apo, Galadima round about and Gwagwalape, Nyanya axis,” the CP revealed.
The Abuja police chief said 25 arms and ammunition were recovered from the gang, including five AK47, 11 fabricated revolver rifles, three pump action, one fabricated barreta pistol with magazine, one fabricated AK47 rifle with the magazine, one fabricated SMG, two English pistols and nine magazines.
Others are one Mark4 rifle with fully loaded magazine and some expended 6.5mm ammunition, eight pistol ammunition, two live ammunition, 254 live cartridges, 58 AK47 ammunition and 15 expended AK47 ammunition.
The police also recovered 12 cars of different makes with 18 different vehicle plate numbers.
The CP said that his officers and men also apprehended two suspects, namely William Peter and Nathaniel Achia on October 5, in connection with Avaungwa Dennis’s case and a case of armed robbery that took place at Highland Estate, Auta Balaifi in karu LGA of Nasarawa State on June 12.
Two AK47, two pump action and about 190 live ammunition were recovered from them.
