Edo State Police Command is to immediately reduce office personnel by 50 percent and subsequently deploy them for beats and patrol duties.
It has also decided to confine officers and personnel to their Divisions and Area Commands to enhance quick responses and mobilization to distress calls.
‎Mr Chris Ezike, the state Police Commissioner who gave this indication in Benin City also identified the spate of armed robberies, kidnapping, cultism and cult related crimes and traffic management within Benin as challenges facing the command.
Ezike, speaking at a reception for the visiting Assistant Inspector of General of Police, Zone 5, Benin, said in order to address the aforementioned problems, the command after due consultation with field Commanders and operatives, has set a 6-week deadline to make the Police highly visible police in the state.‎
Other measures, he said, include the reactivation and re-invigoration of all tactical teams to make for more effective interventions because of manpower shortage and injection of 60 new personnel to the state traffic division to boost their strength for effective traffic control and management within Benin metropolis
Others are the engagement in various but intelligent led raids of criminal hideouts and community engagement and participation in policing and law enforcement.
The Commissioner disclosed that these interventions have started yielding positive results as there has been drastic reduction of highway robberies and kidnappings across the state, particularly along the Benin/Ekiadolor/Okada/Lagos highway and Ehor/Ekpoma/Auchi/Okpella highway and the Igbanke/Uromi road which was a nightmare for road users.
He added that the issue of cultism and cult related issues were being addressed with vigour, adding that several arrests have been made especially at Ekpoma and Auchi axis and that the cases were at various stages of investigations.
Commending the state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for his promised strategic partnership with the police and other security agencies in matters of security and safety, Ezike said‎, “with the passion and commitment of the governor, some logistical issues facing the command will be addressed soon.”
