Between election violence and the spoils of office

Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC Enugu state, Emeka Ononamadu has stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, does not give power as the power to do so lies with Nigerians.
The REC made this known while briefing journalists in his office yesterday, to clear the air on the speculations in some quarters of the state that the poll has been cancelled.
MR. Ononamadu said he had instructed all his Polling Officers that election should start by 8am and which they all adhered to, as the Commission has worked assiduously to achieved that.
In his words,”Nigeria is our employer, so we have no choice than to serve Nigerians, INEC does not give power, it is Nigerians that give power.
“It is for the people to decide who they want to represent them. We are here to do our work, to deliver on our mandate and that’s what we are set out to do.”
He said some thugs wanted to cause setbacks for the Commission in Nsukka by snatching empty ballot boxes before the commencement of polls, but the readiness of INEC made it possible to overcome their attempted disruptions.
According to him, “we were prepared for them, because we made alternative ballot boxes available and election started by 8am.
“Snatching of ballot boxes is a mundane thing, it is no longer fashionable, you have to sell yourself through your achievements to win peoples’ votes.
On All Progressives Congress, APC gubernatorial candidate, Sen. Ayogu Eze, that his name was not on the ballot paper, he said it is an administrative issue, “since the party’s logo is on the ballot paper, there is issue on that.”
