Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Engr. Babachir David Lawal, has expressed the All Progressives Congress, APC-led Federal Government’s shock that performing individuals like Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State could still be found in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Engr. Lawal, who said this in Abakaliki, during his one-day working visit to the state, the FG was delighted with Umahi’s performances adding however that good men are found everywhere.
“We are surprised that people like you are still found in the PDP, but there is a cliche that says ‘good men are found everywhere’. We like such people but we will not envy them if they remain in PDP because they also challenge the APC governors to perform. That is the essence of opposition and competition in politics,” he said stressing that when opposition governors performed creditably well they raise the bar for the ruling party.
The SGF was in Ebonyi to commission and inspect some projects embarked upon by the administration of Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State.
Engr. Lawal, while inspecting the flyovers built by the state government within the short time in office, expressed surprise that Umahi was able to record such achievement within a short time despite the present economic predicament.
He, who appreciated the Governor Umahi’s prudence in managing the available meager resources accruable to the state, said he had set a standard for both federal and state governments to emulate
Engr. Lawal noted that Umahi is one of the few persons who believed that meager resource could be used to achieve much if we remove greed that breeds corruption.
He commended the people of Ebonyi state for choosing Governor Umahi, adding that the Presidency was fully in support of the Governor’s developmental strides as the present federal government was not interested in which party any governor belongs “but whether or not you are doing a wonderful job for your people.”
The SGF added that the projects embarked upon by Umahi were not only going to be useful to Ebonyi people but Nigerians at large saying, “Nkalagu Cement factory and this road when completed are not going to be used by Igbos alone but other Nigerians.”
Lawal used the occasion to condemn the recent unrest caused by Biafra agitators in South-East and called on the Igbo leaders and indeed leaders everywhere to call the misguided youths to order.
Other projects commissioned by SGF were CBN Road in the Centenary City, Governor’s Lodge named after ex-governor Sam Egwu. He also inspected internal roads constructed by Governor Umahi.
Umahi thanked SGF for the visit and noted that the numerous projects he embarked upon were done as instructed by God and expressed his readiness to do more.
Earlier in his address, the commissioner for works, Engr Fidelis Nweze noted that Governor Umahi was spurred to embark on the reconstruction of the road with flyovers due to constant loss of lives and property as a result of incessant accident on it.
The works commissioner explained that the three flyovers were being constructed by an Expatriate company, China Zhunghaio at a sum of N5.482 billion.
Engr Nweze urged the federal government to refund Ebonyi State government over N10 billion used in construction of some federal roads in the state by both past and present government.
