A Muslim scholar, Imam Shuaib Abdullah, on Sunday in Lagos called on Nigerians to always remember journalists who suffered and are still facing injustice in the course of their duties.
Abdullah said this l at the launch of a book entitled: `Muslims and The Threat of The Media’, written by a journalist, AbdurRasheed Abubakar, to commemorate: the World Press Freedom Day.
Abubakar, a reporter with the Lagos based entertainment soft sell; Encomium Magazine, is also the Executive Director, the Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation, an affiliate of The Muslim Congress, TMC.
He said that, “Muslims should not only examine the threats the media alleged to bring into the society through its reports but also its roles in entrenching democracy in the country.
“We should remember those journalists who suffered and are still suffering injustice in the course of their duties.’’
He said that Islam was not against the media, but, lamented that, “There is a blanket condemnation of Muslims for offences committed by individual Muslims and this should not be so.’’
Also, the book’s reviewer, Dr Mahfouz Adedimeji, the Director, Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin,Kwara described the nine-chapter book as being “compact and beautifully packaged’’.
. Adedimeji said that ,“The beauty of the book lies in the fact that the writer identified the problems that attempt to smear the images of Islam and Muslims.
“He also provided a road map through which Muslims can liberate themselves from the oppressive claws of the media- hawks whose stock-in-trade is to slam Islam and maul Muslims.
“Abubakar has evidently done Muslims a world of good in his timely book.
“At a time that there is an unprecedented upsurge in the number of media houses springing up in Nigeria and the rest of the world, his message that Muslims cannot afford to be indifferent is right on target,’’ Adedimeji said.
The reviewer commended the author for writing the book in simple and clear expressions and establishing in the book that the media drew its insights from scholars and experts.
He said that, `Muslims and the Threat of the Media’, is a compelling book for all to read as it draws its inspiration from the experiences of a researcher and a journalism practitioner,’’ he said. NAN
