Football administrators in Nigeria have been charged to beam their searchlight on the grassroots with a view to getting more football players for the country.
Group Chairman/Publisher, Nigerian Pilot Newspapers and Newsworld Magazine, Prince Dennis Sami gave the advice at the opening match of Prince Dennis Sami Riverine Football tournament held at Ilashe in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, Lagos, on Saturday.
Speaking on the football tournament, Prince Sami said it was instituted to keep the youth in the community busy instead of engaging in shady things and to discover the talents in them.
“Today’s event is more or less a talent hunt to discover more talents that can bring laurels to the country. The tournament is to keep the youths in the riverine communities such as Takwa Bay, Ibeshe, Ilashe and others busy instead of engaging in shady dealings, and to make them to discover the hidden talents in them.
“I will advise the sports administrators in the country, despite that we have several sports and football academies in the country, they should also go into the interior parts of the country to discover more sports talents.”
Prince Sami equally advised youths in the country not to engage in acts capable of soil their image and that of Nigeria, rather he urged them to take on any sporting event that would always keep them busy.
The first match of the tournament played on Saturday morning, between Prince Dennis Sami Football and Godson Football Club ended in 2-2 draw, while the second match played in the evening between God Pass Them Football Club and Highlander Football Club also ended in a barren draw.
Today, Ever light Football team will take on Ibeshe United Football team, while Golden Star Football Club will engage Young Stars Football Club.
The winner of the tournament, according to Prince Sami, will go home with N300,000 with a trophy while the first and second runners ups will be rewarded with N100,000 and N50, 000 with trophies respectively.
The final match of the football fiesta will be on Saturday, December 26.
