A furious former Super Eagles assistant coach, Joe Erico has slammed Nigeria’s number one, Vincent Enyeama ‘’for feigning an injury in order to avoid national team call-up only to play 90 minutes for Lille in France few days later.’’
Enyeama withdrew from international duty with Nigeria against South Africa recently on account of a back injury. He, however, made a dramatic appearance as his French club Lille beat Reims 3-1 last Saturday thus raising questions over the claims of authenticity of his injury claim.
“Enyeama is the team’s captain who has shown commitment to national assignment over the past decades. But now it appears his interest in the Super Eagles is waning. If this is the case, I’ll suggest strongly that Enyeama should take a deserved bow out of the national team set up so as to make way to younger goalkeepers,’’ said Erico in an exclusive chat with Nigerian Pilot Sports at the weekend.
Enyeama won his 100th cap when Uganda upstaged Nigeria at home in a friendly in Uyo a fortnight ago.
But the goalkeeper opted out of a second friendly against South Africa in Nelspruit after officials said he has suffered a back injury.
Surprisingly though, Enyeama was fit to play for Lille days later in a French Ligue 1 match.
The home win ensured Lille remain in eighth place on the Ligue 1 table with 44 points from 31 matches.
The goalkeeper, an international since 2001, has hinted on bringing down the curtains on an illustrious career that has seen him feature in three World Cups and win the AFCON in 2013.
He has alerted the country to start grooming another goalkeeper to take over from him.
Only last week, president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, warned the country’s top stars that average players and good players who have bad attitude will no longer be tolerated in the Super Eagles.
