Just as Saturday’s rerun governorship election in Bayelsa State draws near, the Peoples Democratic Party, has raised the alarm that armed militants in concert with security personnel have invaded Peremabiri community in Southern Ijaw.
He also called for the immediate arrest of General Ogunbos, just as community leaders from Peremabiri reached out to the campaign office seeking government’s urgent intervention and the security agencies.
The Director, Publicity, Restoration Campaign Organisation of PDP, Mr. Jonathan Obuebite, claimed on Tuesday afternoon that the community was invaded with six heavily armed gunboats, shooting endlessly as villagers scampered for safety.
Obuebite, who spoke in a live phone-in programme on state radio in Yenagoa, called for the immediate arrest of the militants led by a prominent ex-militant.
He said the attack on the riverine community was coming less than one day to the distribution of electoral materials in Southern Ijaw ahead of the supplementary election scheduled for January 9.
The Independent National Electoral Commission had announced on Monday that it would commence distribution of electoral materials on Wednesday January 6.
Obuebite recalled that Governor Seriake Dickson had only on Monday, at a press conference, drawn the attention of the world to the plot by the opposition to rig the election by unleashing violence and mayhem on Southern Ijaw.
He said, “I want to remind the public that Governor Dickson only yesterday (Monday) while addressing a press conference drew the attention of the public to a plot by the opposition to rig the rerun election in Southern Ijaw by further unleashing violence and mayhem.
“The attack on Peremabiri by militants has vindicated our position as a party.”
Obuebite further called on the security agencies to swiftly mobilise its men to Peremabiri to arrest the situation and also bring the perpetrators to book.
As part of efforts to stay in constant communication with the people of Peremabiri and keep track of the situation, the campaign spokesman urged the people to call the party’s hotlines given out on Monday during the news conference.
Meanwhile, a statement by the Director of Media and Publicity of the Sylva-Igiri Campaign Organisation of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Nathan Egba, urged the security agents to live up to their responsibilities by ensuring peace in the area.
On the allegations by the PDP Restoration campaign organization that former militant leader in the state, Mr. Eris Paul, known as General Ogunboss, launched attack on his people of Peremabiri in Southern Ijaw LGA, Chief Egba, said there was no truth in the story as confirmed by the Joint Task Force, JTF.
