RECTOR of the Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia, Associate Professor Silas Gyar has applauded the state House of Assembly and the Emir of Lafia, Isa Mustapha Agwai l, for their intervention that led to the suspension of over three weeks industrial action embarked upon by joint union of the state-owned tertiary institutions.
The Rector, who gave the commendation on Monday at his office in Lafia while answering questions from newsmen, also appreciated the union for showing understanding with stakeholders in that regard, and expressed optimism that the gesture would allow for dialogue towards amicable resolution of the contending issues.
“We thank the union for understanding with the stakeholders to suspend their industrial action and it is our hope that the gesture would accord government the opportunity to dialogue with the union with a view to resolving the issues raised.”
Gyar pointed out that though the strike had affected academic calendar of the institution, the management of the polytechnic would work towards adjusting some academic activities in order to meet up with the time loss.
He assured that the institution would continue to strive towards achieving academic excellence in line with its mission statement by improving on the existing high academic standards and enjoined both staff and students of the polytechnic to resume work immediately.
As at the time of a visit to the polytechnic, Nigerian Pilot observed that academic activities had not fully commenced as some of the lecturers were seen in groups discussing their experiences during the strike, just as there was low turnout of students.
