As the world celebrates the 2016 World Red Cross Day, the Deputy Governor of Imo State and Chairman of Red Cross, Imo State chapter, Prince Eze Madumere, said the activities of the body is a way of saving human lives.
Madumere stated this while interacting with journalists in commemoration of the day at his official residence in Owerri, Imo State, yesterday.
He reminded the public that Red Cross was primarily founded to ensure that conflicts must have acceptable rules with a view to reducing human suffering. He said the body cares more about proactive measures of engagement rather than wait for outbreak of conflicts that may bring untold hardship to the people.
The deputy governor disclosed that World Red Cross Day was also the day that its founder, Sir Jean Henry Dunant, who was the first recipient of a Noble Prize was born. He narrated Dunant’s sad experience during the battle of Solferino in Italy which led to wanton destruction, while those who ought to be saved were left to die in excruciating pains.
He attributed the laws and rules protecting civilians and other personnel in times of conflict to the Geneva Convention, which he said could not have been possible without the activities of the International Committee on Red Cross.
Prince Madumere stressed that Red Crossers are world citizens who are volunteers for service, unified for one single purpose of saving lives and making the world a better place, while caring less about race, tribe, religion, ideology or even political divides of a people. He also listed among others neutrality, independence, impartiality, universality and the primary aim of saving humanity as major principles of the Red Cross.
On his stewardship, he said as the chairman of the state chapter of Red Cross Society, they have championed a lot of life saving courses during flood disasters, accidents, abandoned children and other interventions. He disclosed that Imo Red Cross, through him, procured an ambulance, which helps to ensure quick intervention and evacuation of victims during accidents or even during incidences occasioned by humans or nature.
The deputy governor also averred that the Red Cross Society through Owelle Rochas Okorocha, who is also a Red Crosser, has achieved so much in the area of curbing baby factories, illegal abductions and ensuring that orphans do not suffer or lack the basic needs of life, while educating them to become useful citizens.
He called on the public to join Red Cross and learn to be a life saver wherever they find themselves while urging the public to always find time to donate to the body in order to cater for the less privileged, especially orphans at Red Cross Special Homes.
