group under the aegis of Concerned Citizens for Educational Development has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sack the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, for removing 13 vice chancellors of federal universities in contradiction of academic processes.
A statement by its national convener, Comrade Solomon Adodo, described Adamu’s unilateral decision to sack the 13 VCs and appoint replacements immediately without recourse to the governing councils of the respective universities as a misplacement of priority, unconstitutional and a flagrant abuse of the 2009 ASUU/FG terms of agreement and the 2012 Memorandum of Understanding, MoU.
The group insisted that the newly appointed VCs came from the same institutions and states in contradiction of academic processes.
“We therefore call on President Muhammadu Buhari to maintain his integrity and uphold transparency/due process by immediately sacking the Minister of Education for causing the federal government this avoidable embarrassment.
“The president should order and ensure the reinstatement of the wrongly sacked vice chancellors so that they can complete their respective tenures. He should further direct the Ministry of Education to comply with laid-down procedure of advertising, interviewing and appointment of vice chancellors by governing councils,” the statement noted.
The group, while commending the courage and sincerity of Comrade Adamu Babayo, chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, ATBU, Bauchi, chapter, condemned the conspiratorial silence of ASUU at the material time.
“We were deeply worried by the deafening conspiratorial silence of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, over this bald-faced insult from the Minister of Education.
“It however became apparent that the ASUU president at the material time seemed to have a pact with based on the fact that most of the vice chancellors appointed as replacement hail from Kano State and majority are staff of Bayero University over this bald-faced insult from the Minister of Education.
“We appreciate the courage and sincerity of Comrade Babayo in condemning the dictatorial action of Mallam Adamu Adamu regarding the sack and appointment of 13 vice chancellors without consultations with the governing councils of the respective universities,” the statement further stated.
The statement decried that the minister truncated the tenures of 17 serving chief executives of parastatals in the Ministry of Education and appointed his friends and cronies, including his erstwhile personal assistant, Dr. Bappah Abdullahi, whom he appointed as executive secretary of TETFund.
“We need no talisman to further make it empirically clear that MallamAdamuAdamu is out to rubbish the pristine good reputation of President Muhammadu Buhari. By his unprecedented action, the minister is now known to be the first person to carry out an academic coup de tat in Nigeria and unfortunately so, during the Buhari administration that was welcome by many Nigerians as the harbinger of due process and integrity.”
According to Adodo, “In a commando style of forceful action, he sacked 13 vice chancellors and replaced them with his friends and relations in utter disdain for the spelt out due process of interview and selection. A vast majority of these newly appointed vice chancellors came from the same Institution and State in contradiction of Academic processes.”
