There are strong indications that all is now set for the House of Representatives to announce as well as inaugurate chairmen and deputy chairmen of some House Standing Committees this week.
Since its inauguration on June 9, 2015, the lower chamber had only managed to inaugurate few ad hoc committees to pilot its affairs pending when the standing committees are inaugurated.
Such ad hoc committees inaugurated so far include: Rules and Business and Public Affairs.
It had also inaugurated its selection committee comprising of one legislator from each state.
The work of the selection committee is to critically look into the CV of each member with a view to knowing which committee they are best suited for.
A member of the ad hoc committee on Public Affairs, Hon Abdulrazak Namdas, hinted that the delay in announcing the chairmen and deputy chairmen of the various committees was the need to carry every member of the House along and ensure they play active part in the committee they were assigned to
Namdas, representing Mayo Belwa/Ganye/ Jada/ Toungo Federal Constituency of Adamawa state, said the selection committee had since finished its work and assured that the committees would soon be announced on the floor of the House.
A legislator privy to the activities of the selection committee informed Nigerian Pilot that some lawmakers loyal to the speaker had been pencilled to head some of the so-called ‘juicy committees’.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, argued that just as President Buhari had nominated those who played vital role during his campaign as his ministerial nominees, the speaker had also picked some of his loyalists to head these committees.
Our correspondent also gathered that as the House resumes sitting today, some of the sensitive committees such as Finance, Appropriations, Rules and Business, House Services, Defence, Police Affairs and Public Affairs would be announced and inaugurated this week.
