As Nigeria joined the rest of the world to celebrate World Teachers’ Day, WTD, Principal of LEA Wuse 1 Nursery and Primary School, in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, Mrs. Florence Adebayo said quality education can only be achieved by providing teaching materials and retraining of teachers.
Mrs. Adebayo, who disclosed this on Wednesday in an interview with Nigerian Pilot, Abuja, explained that “Teachers are nation builders. If you can write your name, thank your teacher but if you cannot write your name, better look for a teacher. So it is a way of appreciating, and acknowledging what the teachers are doing.”
She added that the quality of teachers will go a long way to imparting in the younger generation, adding that government has tried to achieve this but could still do more in training and retraining teachers.
“The way forward is education for all, the responsibility of all. What I mean is that we can’t live it for one sector, it is for everybody, the teachers, parents, government and even the students,” she said.
The principal also called on the federal government to employ more qualified teachers for more efficient and effective teaching.
Similarly, a computer teacher/ examination officer, Junior Government Secondary School Wuse Zone 3, Mr. Innocent Duya, said though Nigeria celebrated world Teachers Day with the rest of the world, but teachers were not well paid in terms of take home salaries.
Duya lamented that teachers welfare packages were not encouraging, noting that most of the allowances they enjoyed during Nasir El’Rufai as Minister of FCT are no longer given to them.
“The welfare packages for teachers in FCT are nothing to write home about. During the El’Rufai administration, we were given 100 per cent rent allowance but when the immediate past minister, Bala Mohammed came in, the allowance was slashed to 60 percent, even at the end we don’t get up to 60 percent.
“Again, the 13th month end of year bonus has been stoped since the past minister came on board. In fact, teacher’s welfare should be considered at least to encourage us for the good work,” he said.
He called on government to urgently do something about the welfare package for teachers and also increase their salary to enable them deliver in their mandate.
