As mixed reactions continue to trail the fresh N10 billion loan facility recently approved by the Rivers State House of Assembly for the State Governor, Barr Nyesom Wike, the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state is insisting that the governor tells Rivers people the truth behind the loans.
This was even as the leadership of the Assembly stated that there was nothing illegal in the approval of the loan
APC Media and Publicity Committee Secretary in the state, Mr Godstime Orlukwu, who spoke to newsmen, yesterday, in Port Harcourt, stated that the governor was mortgaging the future of Rivers people as the loans so far obtained were not tied to any project.
He said: “I want to call on Govenor Nyesom Wike to come clean before Rivers people and tell us the exact truth about these loans he has been collecting; N40 billion in six months?
“Curiously, when the APC governorship candidate, Amaopusenibo Dr Dakuku Adol Peterside, raised this alarm that Governor Wike was secretly seeking another loan of N10 billion, the entire PDP apparatus descended heavily on the innocent man. They rained abuses, curses and even threatened many of us.
“To worsen matters, the loans are not tied to any feasible projects; schools are shut down, hospitals are shut down, nothing is working in Rivers State. No landmark projects, and N40 billion loan has been collected on our behalf; our future is being mortgaged.”
But in a swift reaction, the Chairman, House Committee on Information and training, Hon Sam Ogeh, who spoke with Nigerian Pilot, described as misleading, the claims by the APC.
Ogeh, who represents Emohua constituency in the Assembly, pointed out that the governor had the constitutional right to seek loan approval from the House where the need arises.
“The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Rt Hon Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, has vowed and has as a guiding principle to transact all legislative businesses of the House within the bounds of the law.
“The government is entitled to borrow money when the need arises. He approached this House for approval to borrow and that was what we did. There is nothing illegal for us to sit at odd times,” he stated.
