All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State has challenged Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, Pastor Usani Usani Uguru, and Minister of State in the ministry, Cladius Omoleye Daramola, on the need to turn around the fortunes of the region for the better.
APC in a statement issued in Port Harcourt drew the attention of the ministers to the expectations of the people, while congratulating them on their appointment and describing them as seasoned and patriotic administrators whose appointments were pointer to President Muhammadu Buhari’s desire for the immediate emancipation and development of the Niger Delta region.
The statement signed by the state party chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, appealed to the ministers to “convoke, as a matter of urgency, a summit of Niger Delta elders and stakeholders to proffer solutions to the myriad of problems facing the region, so as to make the work of the ministers easier.
And, while expressing confidence that the suggestion would be accepted and implemented, the state APC drew attention to some of the major issues such as reorganisation and streamlining of the amnesty programme to make it more effective and ensure greater stability and security of the region.
The party urged the ministers to ensure the inclusion of the youths from Cross River and Imo States, warning that
the exclusion of the youths of the two states might pose a security risk to the entire region.
The party also drew attention to the need to complete and equip the skills acquisition centres in the region, with the aim of training the youths and women by empowering them to become meaningfully engaged on a sustainable basis.
Other areas of urgent attention, according to the Rivers APC, include completion of the East-West Road, construction of the East-West Coastal rail line, complete overhaul of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, to ensure its effectiveness, ensure release of funds due to the NDDC to enable it complete on-going projects and initiate new ones, among others, to speed up the development of the region.
