THE RIVERS
State House
of Assembly yesterday
renamed the state-owned
university of science
technology to Rivers State
University.
The Assembly also passed
the Rivers State University
of Science and Technology
Teaching Hospital Bill,
2017, retouching it to read
the Rivers State University
Teaching Hospital Law.
The change in the name
came after lawmakers
debated on the report of
the House Committee on
Education, which was
earlier submitted by its
chairman, Hon Doctor
Farah Dagogo.
The committee had in
its report recommended,
among other things, the
renaming of the institution
due to the directive of
the National Universities
Commission, NUC, that
universities should only

offer courses that depict
their names or risk being
de-accredited.
In their debates,
lawmakers lauded the
recommendation of the
committee and all agreed
the need to rename the
university.
However, there
was disagreement on
the abbreviation the
university would bear.
While Hon. Micheal
Chinda and Majority
Leader Martin
Amaewhule wanted
it to read RSU, Hons.
Evans Bipi and Innocent
Barikor, on the other hand
suggested the university
be abbreviated to read
RVSU.
After listening to the
submissions of members,
Speaker Ikuinyi -Owaji
Ibani put the committee’s
report to vote, which
all lawmakers present
voted for its passage
