Former Rivers State Governor, Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has commended Catholic priests in the state over their non-involvement in the battle for supremacy raging between him and Governor Nyesom Wike.
Amaechi made the commendation while speaking at the dedication service of Saint Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, Elechi Beach, Port Harcourt.
The ex-governor, who stated that there were moves to impeach him, further stated that prayers from the priests backed him up.
He said: “I want to thank the priests, almost all of you were praying for me. If not for your prayers, I will probably have been a former governor a long time ago. The President wanted me out at all cost; the present governor wanted me out at all cost and the wife of the President wanted me out at all cost.
They did everything they did. Let me say one thing; they had everything except God.
“When I landed at the airport, I saw soldiers but I said, I did not need them. When they were in power, they were using soldiers to chase us about. In the present government, that will not continue. You don’t solve impunity; if they had impunity before, we will have rule of law now. I thank all of you publicly for the support and prayers.”
Amaechi, who lauded the Catholic Church for staying away from politics, urged religious leaders to shun politics, saying that the involvement of the clergy in politics will divide the Church along political divides.
“My Lord, you were not here in 2007 and 2008, I nearly changed my Church, not my faith, because the Church was involved in politics. I said I was going to go to one of these born-again churches and start worshipping, but Fr. Steve and Fr. John said over their dead body will I leave the Church and I came back to the Catholic Church. Today, I am very proud to be a Catholic Church.
“I think the Church maybe, listened to my criticisms then and decided to avoid politics this time around. Maybe, it is because of the leadership of Your Lordship that made the Church to avoid politics. All of us who are Catholics and are in different political groups should be allowed to ply our trade. Let the priests not get involved so they won’t get the Church on one party or the other.”
Speaking earlier, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt, Most Reverend Camillus Etukudoh commended the former governor, the APC governorship candidate, and their entourage for making time out for the dedication of the church building.
The dedication service was attended by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the state, Dr. Dakuku Peterside; former Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, and former Chief of Staff, Government House, Hon. Tony Okocha, among others
