Rivers State Government demands for the immediate and unconditional release of Chief Kenneth Kobani, Secretary to the Rivers State Government, and Hon. Cyril Wite, Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Projects.
Kenneth and Wite were arrested and detained on election day by the Nigerian Military, simply for being members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Their fate is the same with thousands of PDP supporters who were brutalized, arrested, shot at, and even killed by the military and thugs of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the rerun elections on Saturday.
In many reported instances, the role of the military in the inconclusive elections have been shameful, embarrassing, and a kick in the face of constitutional democracy.
The military was indistinguishable from the rag tag thugs of the APC, under the direct command of Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, the Minister of Transportation, Mr Dakuku Peterside, Mr Magnus Abe, and others.
Never in the history of Rivers State have we witnessed such a blatant deployment of maximum violence against unarmed voters.
Kenneth Kobani has been chained to a chair overnight, and denied his medication, despite his failing health.
We strongly condemn this dehumanizing treatment, and call for the release of all those detained.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army, yesterday, stated that it arrested the Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), Chief Kenneth Kobani, for allegedly disrupting the Saturday’s National and State Assembly rerun election in the state.
Kobani, who is still in Directorate of State Security, DSS custody as at the time of filing this report, is from Bodo, Gokana in Ogoni.
The Commander, 2 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Brigadier-General Stephenson Olabanji, who spoke to newsmen at the Police headquarters in Port Harcourt yesterday, said the law of the country respects nobody, how highly placed in society.
He said: “Many people were arrested yesterday for disrupting the electoral process and the law is not meant for just the lower cadre alone. No matter who you are, if you go again the law, you will definitely face the music.
“So, there is nothing like being Secretary to the State Government, many people were arrested as you have been told. A lot of people were arrested.”
The Army Commander denied claims by the Rivers State government that some of its commissioners and other top officials were manhandled by men of the Nigerian Army during the rerun election in the state.
Also, the Nigerian Police, Zone 6 Command, says a total of 24 persons were arrested from different parts of the state for various allegations of criminal and electoral offenses during the rerun election.
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Zone 6, Mr. Baba Adisa Bolanta, who also briefed newsmen on the security outcome so far in the election, said those arrested during the rerun election, including two females are currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Port Harcourt.
Bolanta said: “It is pertinent I let you know that we have 24 suspects comprising 22 males and 2 females in police custody, who were arrested from different parts of the state. They are presently undergoing interrogation on allegations of criminal or electoral offences or both.”
The AIG insisted that only four deaths were recorded in the state during the rerun election, pointing out that two persons were killed at Buguma, in Asari-Toru local government area, while two others were killed at Nonwa-Tai, and Omuanwa communities, in Tai and Ikwerre local government areas, respectively.
He said, “If you say arrest, we can say yes, but there was nothing like manhandling. We are meant to protect civilians, not to manhandle them.”
He said, “I am startled this morning after seeing outrageous figure of deaths associated with the elections as dished out by the media. To put the records straight, four deaths were recorded with two in Buguma, while Nonwa-Tai and Omuanwa each recorded one.
