Peoples Democratic Party, PDP caucus in the senate yesterday called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to as a matter of urgency, release outstanding results of the rerun National and State House of Assembly elections held in Rivers State last Saturday.
The caucus, which condemned in its entirety, the violence that rocked the election in which many lives were lost, said INEC had no reason whatsoever withholding the results after collation of results at various poll units and centres have been done.
INEC had as a result of violence that marred the election, suspended it in eight out of 23 local governments in the state and as well suspended announcement of results already collated in some state and federal constituencies within the state as a result of attack on some of their staffers and Adhoc staff, especially the Youth Corps member, abducted and killed in the mayhem.
But the PDP senators after their meeting with the party’s national chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sherrif at the National Assembly yesterday, called for release of the outstanding results without any further delay.
In a communiqué signed by the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, the senators said, saying further delay, may send wrong signals to stake holders in the entire process, particularly the PDP in Rivers State whose candidates were overwhelmingly voted for in the election.
PDP senators also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to support the ongoing commission of enquiry investigating the killings in the Rivers re-run elections with a view to bringing perpetrators to justice.
