Nigeria Bar Association,
NBA in Rivers State has
decried the transfer of the
state election tribunal to
Abuja, the federal capital
territory.
President of the Court
of Appeal, Justice Zainab
Bulkachuwa had approved
the relocation of the
election petitions tribunal
to Abuja in order to avert
further violence in the state.
But spokesman of the
NBA in Port Harcourt, Mr.
Angus Chukwuka, said
lawyers in the state have
been deprived of income
that would have accrued to
them due to the relocation.
Angus, who stated this
in a chat with newsmen in
Port Harcourt, yesterday,
reasoned that petitioners
would prefer to hire
lawyers in Abuja and its
environs in order to avoid
the extra cost associated
with transporting lawyers
from Rivers State.
He said, “They will pay
high bills to hire lawyers
here in Port Harcourt to
Abuja; pay their hotel
bills, flight tickets, feeding,
feeding and then flight
tickets.
“What in practical terms
that means is that, if those
persons who would want to
file matters at the tribunal
would have to recourse
to lawyers in Abuja or its
environs thereby cutting
down on the earnings of
lawyers in Rivers State.”
According to him, until
the Judiciary Staff Union of
Nigeria, JUSUN, in the state
resume work, lawyers will
continue to suffe
