Recently, Nigerians were apprehensive that President MohammaduBuhari may buy into the same-sex marriage bill, which the United State of America, USA recently legalised due to the massive support he received from that country and the United Kingdom, UK during his election.
The fear was heightened by the news of Buhari’s visit to the US. It has since been established that Nigeria, and indeed many African countries will not be party to the same- sex marriage deal. Still, the pertinent questions are, is same sex practice in line with African tradition? Is it right before God and what is its effect on children’s rights?
The issue of children is premised on the fact that in some places where same- sex marriage is allowed, the partners may also adopt children.
However, that same sex marriage is practiced in the US and other countries, does not make it right in God’s eyes. This is seen in the scripture (Mark 10:6-9). Also, as Jesus quoted from the Book of Genesis, where the very first, God-ordained marriage originated, “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them“(Gen 1:27). Here, it is obvious that God not only performed the first marriage ceremony, He was the originator of marriage and it was in the beginning between a man and a woman.
In a nutshell, it means that people who are in this sort of relationship do not have the interest of children at heart. They cannot show genuine motherly and fatherly love towards children and cannot teach children good moral values as well as fight for children’s rights in the proper manner.
Assistant Parish Priest, Wuse zone 2, Reverend Jeremiah Benjamin, in his opinion as regards children, said, it is in the child’s best interest that he or she is raised by the biological father and mother. This rule removes the difficulties faced by many children who are orphans or are raised by a single parent, a relative, or a foster parent. The unfortunate situation of such children will be the norm for all children of a same- sex marriage. A child in a same -sex marriage home will always be deprived of either his natural mother or father’s affection. He will necessarily be raised by one party who has no blood relationship with him. He will always be deprived of either a mother or a father as role model. Such children cannot have good upbringing according to many respondents in a study.
Rev. Benjamin said that one of the main reasons why the State bestows numerous benefits on marriage is that by its very nature and design, marriage provides the normal conditions for a stable, affectionate, and moral atmosphere that is beneficial to children, all fruits of the mutual affection of the parents. This aids in enhancing the nation and strengthening society, an evident interest of the State. On the other hand, same-sex marriage does not provide such conditions. Its primary purpose, objectively speaking, is the personal gratification of two individuals whose union is sterile by nature. It is not entitled, therefore, to the protection the State extends to true marriage.
“I think the thing is for safety reason I can never imagine why some people will think that being gay or lesbian is good. When you think about goodness, you talk about the universal goodness. The goodness of a thing should be universal if you are saying it is good, then you have to think about the children. I grew up in an environment where I was very close to my mother, and whenever something happened to me, I called on my mummy to solve the problem.
“I can imagine that in a situation of same-sex marriage, a child neither has a father or mother to turn to in times of difficulties and that translates to sacrificing the well being of the child more so as children are known to be closer to their mother than their father. Decades of research on the ideal family structure for children is a two parent, mother-father family. Thus research consistently showed and still shows that children raised in such families are more likely to thrive psychologically, mentally, and physically than children reared in any other kind of family configuration”. He said.
Apart from the effects on children, Mr. Nnamdi Diala, a banker, sees same- sex marriage as affecting women greatly, negatively. “I see a lot of women being faced with the danger of losing their husbands and becoming single parents.
He said children raised by married same-sex couple showed higher rates of depression, unhappiness, fear and anxiety than those raised by married men and women.
A woman, Mrs. Patience Idoka is more worried about homes being broken in countries that have legalised same- sex marriage while Coordinator, Catholic Charismatic Renewal Kubwa, Bro. Anthony Mbawe gave similar explanation as the Assistant Parish Priest, Wuse zone 2, Reverend Jeremiah Benjamin, that gay marriage is against God’s original purpose of procreation, re-emphasizing that same-sex simply cannot provide a child with the benefits of biological connection and gender diversity that married male and female parents could provide.”
Same- sex marriage in Nigeria stands forbidden, it is against our culture, religions, both Christianity and Islam. The present administration must as a matter of fact key into the same sex prohibition act bill by the former President, Dr. GoodluckEbele Jonathan.
