Former managing director of Abuja Leasing Company, Mr. Tunji Tolani has described the chairman of Senate Committee on Environment, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, as the best candidate for the Senate presidency.
Tolani, while speaking to journalists in Abuja, urged the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to do the needful on the zoning formula and choice of candidate by officially endorsing Saraki for the country’s number three position.
Tolani, an ally of former FCT Minister and now governor-elect of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, argued that Saraki was eminently qualified to emerge as Senate president and lead the upper chamber of National Assembly with his vast experience as a former banker, two-term governor, longest serving chairman of the governors forum and versatile lawmaker since 2011.
Exchanging views with journalists in Abuja, the Offa-born industrialist and technocrat disclosed that the former governor of Kwara State had paid his dues to the APC with his overwhelming support and absolute loyalty at the hours of need.
“There should be no sentiment on the issue of Senate presidency; I pray the APC leadership to be guided by objectivity and reality by coming out in clear terms to nominate Senator Saraki for the plum job.
“Saraki’s record in Kwara State as two-term governor is marvelous. He became chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, and left indelible mark there. So I strongly appeal to those who belive in merit to settle for Senator Saraki as Senate President in the 8th National Assembly,” he explained.
Tolani, whose father was one time Finance Commissioner in Kwara State, argued that there was no need to look at the North East for the Senate presidency for now.
His ground was that the present Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Mahmud Mohammed and president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, are both from the North East geo-political region of the country and warned that too much power must not be vested in a region at the expense of others.
He then appealed to well meaning members of APC in the North Central to put pressure on the APC national leadership to look at the side of Saraki for the Senate president office.
