Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, have expressed shock and sadness over the Jebba train accident and condoled the families of the deceased.
The Senate president in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on New Media, Bamikole Omishore, described the incident as tragic and commiserated with the families of the deceased, while wishing those injured quick recovery.
He also urged the management of the Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC, to investigate the cause of the accident and put measures in place to prevent a recurrence, stressing that “As we work to improve on the rail system in Nigeria, we have to ensure that we pay attention to safety. Our plan is to make railway the centre of our transportation system conveying thousands of people around the country.”
The Senate president noted that overhauling the rail system for efficiency and safety is part of the core mandate of the All Progressives Congress-led government “which explains why the Lagos to Kano and Lagos to Calabar rail projects were part of the recently signed budget.”
“It is my prayer that this kind of tragic incident will not be witnessed in Nigeria again. May Almighty Allah in his infinite mercy grant the souls of the departed eternal rest and uphold their families in this moment of grief and sorrow.’’
Meanwhile, the emir of Ilorin, who expressed sadness over the unfortunate incident, in a condolence message signed yesterday by the National Secretary, Shehu Alimi Foundation for Peace and Development, Mallam Abdulazeez Arowona, stressed that such occurrence demands urgent probe.
Alhaji Sulu-Gambari said “I received the accident with great shock and sadness. It is unfortunate that it occurred at a time when the federal government is looking inward towards repositioning the sector to further guarantee safety and also provide comfort for travellers.
“There is no doubt that railway is one of the safest modes of transportation, but the remote and immediate cause of this dastardly incident which has thrown many families into mourning requires adequate attention.”
While urging the NRC to expedite action towards protecting the lives and property of passengers, he warned officials of the corporation to be vigilant and be abreast with traffic rules, as well as railway signals.
