Worried by the often degrading treatment meted on patients, especially pregnant women during anti-natal and post-natal care by medical practitioners in the country, Wife of the Senate President and Founder of The Wellbeing Foundation, TWF, Mrs. Toyin Saraki, has called for strict adherence to respectful maternal care practices in order to reduce the trauma in child delivery.
Mrs. Saraki, according to a statement from the media office of the Senate President, made this plea when she hosted the White Ribbon Alliance Board, led by its Country Coordinator, Mr. Tonte Ibraya, at her residence in Abuja.
She said that mothers deserved the right to be meticulously managed from conception, anti-natal, child delivery and beyond.
In order to ensure compliance to best practices in the medical profession, Mrs. Saraki tasked pregnant women to maintain a rating record on healthcare services received from pregnancy till delivery.
Mrs. Saraki said: “As an advocate of respectful maternal care and efficient medical services, I suggest a rating record to checkmate the excesses or any form of infringement meted on mothers in the course of anti-natal and post-delivery services.
“Our women must enjoy full respect and pampering during pregnancy. They require absolute attention and care from both the family and our health officials. I will continue to participate in collaboration with health workers, governmental and non-governmental institutions in nurturing women from pregnancy to child delivery”, she stated.
She commended the federal, state and local governments for their efforts so far in providing quality health care delivery services and called for more intensive outreach that will translate the health policies and programmes of government into meaningful impact on the lives of Nigerians.
Mrs. Saraki said that her Non-governmental organization, The Wellbeing Foundation, has developed tools and programmes where about 50,000 health seekers including women, children, HIV patients will continue to benefit as an insurance cover to alleviate the plight of individuals within the scheme.
She pleaded with the government to come up with modern framework that will help in redressing the grey areas in our health sector.
Earlier, the Country Coordinator, White Ribbon Alliance Board, Mr. Tonte Ibraya, solicited accountability on the part of government in all its health policies and programmes.
He stressed the need for government to provide a platform where citizens will converge to discuss activities of government as it involves provision of quality health care to the people.
