A Grade 1 Area Court, Karmo, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced a 27-year-old scavenger, Gambo Garba, to five weeks in prison for criminal trespass and attempt to commit offence of theft.

The presiding judge, Alhaji, Abubakar Sadiq, gave him an option of N5,0000 fine and warned him to desist from committing crime after serving this punishment.

The convict, who resides at Masaka, Nasarawa State was convicted of the two-count charge brought against him.

Garba prayed the court to temper justice with mercy, that it was the devil that pushed him and that he was going through hard time.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Zannah Dalhatu, told the court that one Adamu Mohammed, the chief security officer of Coca-Cola company, Idu Yard, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on Aug. 23.

Dalhatu said that earlier that day, the convict jumped over the fence with the intention to steal some of the company’s iron stands before he was caught by the security guards on duty.

According to the prosecutor, the offence is punishable under Sections 349 and 95 of the Penal Code.
