Scores of people were injured yesterday at the fish market in Itu-Itam Modern Market otherwise called T-Junction in Itu Local Government of Akwa Ibom State when gunmen suspected to be armed robbers struck.
Goods worth millions of naira were also carted away in the attack that left many traders injured.
The robbery is coming a day after Muritala Mani, the new Commissioner of Police, arrived Akwa Ibom state.
Mani, who arrived Akwa Ibom on Monday, took over from CP Gabriel Achong who retired from the Police after a mandatory 35years of service, a month ago.
Although no life was lost, Nigerian Pilot gathered that two persons, whose names could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report, sustained injuries from gunshots and were rushed to the hospital.
An eye witness who did not want his name in print, told our corresondent that “the robbers, numbering more than 12, invaded the area in three boats and shot sporadically into the air, dispersing passersby while looting went on unabated.”
The victims, it was gathered, were rushed to an undisclosed hospital in Itu, while the Police were said to have arrived late at the scene, when the robbers had finished their operation.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Cordelia Nwawe, who confirmed the incident, said:
“I know the gunmen suspected to be armed robbers actually were at the market today (yesterday) which is supposed to be a fish market. They came through the Opebi Water Way at a T-Junction to Ibeno boundary at Opebi Waterside. They shot sporadically into the air and collected some valuables but no life was lost.
‘’I learnt a young man was struck by a stray bullet and treatment has commenced. I can assure you that, the police are on their trail, and we will get back to you once we have enough information from our personnel on the waterways or creeks” she said.
